Tips for finding new work as a Customer Success Manager

The job market can be tough, especially right now, and finding a new job can be challenging. While the good news is that Customer Success is a department that has grown exponentially in the last 10 years, so has the competition for this popular job title. However, there are steps that customer success managers can take to increase their chances of getting a new job in a tough job market.

1. Network

Networking is one of the most important things that customer success managers can do when looking for a new job. Whether it’s attending industry events, joining professional groups on LinkedIn or Slack channels dedicated to specific groups. Building a strong network can lead to new job opportunities, and it can also help customer success managers learn about new trends in the industry. If you’re in a major metro there are also great resources such as General Assembly that regularly host hiring events, panels, or free sessions. Even if a job doesn’t directly come from it, it can be a great way to secure an internal referral at a company you’re interested in.

2. Build a Strong Online Presence

This is one that personally took me a long time to get into, but I’m sure I would have benefitted from investing early on in my LinkedIn presence and posts. Think of it like your online resume, your business card, and your website all in one.

3. Take the opportunity to brush up on new skills

Hiring managers are looking for lifelong learners, people who want to keep developing their skills, and go beyond the scope. Learning a new skill, taking a new course, or even attending a conference can be a great way to exemplify that spirit.

4. Tailor Your Resume and Cover Letter

Customer success managers should tailor their resume and cover letter to the job they are applying for (this is a solid tip for anyone frankly). They should highlight their relevant experience and skills, and they should also customize their cover letter to the specific company and position they are applying for. This can show potential employers that the candidate has taken the time to research the company and position, and it can also help them stand out from other candidates. Create a template somewhere and edit as needed to save you time.

5. Be Persistent

Finding a new job can be a long and challenging process. Customer success managers should be persistent and not give up if they don't find a job right away. They should continue to network, apply for jobs, and follow up with potential employers. They should also be open to temporary or contract positions, which can lead to full-time opportunities.

Finding a new job can be especially challenging for Gen Z who has less experience, and may have never seen a downtown in the tech market before, but despite the publicized layoffs, there are still fantastic jobs to be had. They may just not offer Pet insurance or free lunches everyday the way they used to 5 years ago.
